Wondering if you can really make a living writing? You absolutely can. Here are some tips to help you increase your income and sell more books.
There’s no doubt about it: being an indie author is hard. Many authors write high-quality books but don’t see sales for months or years, if ever. Sometimes, when the going gets rough, it’s tempting to throw in the towel, especially if you don’t know any other indie authors who are making a decent living from their writing.
But it is entirely possible to make a living as an indie author if you have enough patience, perseverance, and skill, and there are just as many writers making a comfortable living as those who are making nothing. Read on for a few tips to help you earn more money from your books.
1. Remember That Indie Writing is a Business
Every successful indie author understands that what they really are doing is running a small (or maybe not so small) business. It’s easy to forget this while you’re in the throes of creating, but it’s important to keep in mind. Your success doesn’t depend on luck as much as it does on having a solid business plan, including a marketing plan and a plan for what books you are going to release this year.
If you stop thinking of yourself as just a writer and start thinking of yourself as a business owner, it’ll make it easier to focus your efforts on both producing books and marketing them. Your marketing plan is especially important — you’ll need to know who your ideal readers are, where you are likely to find them, and how you’re going to make them aware of your books.
2. Surround Yourself With Successful Authors
It’s easy to fall into the trap of believing that indie publishing is a crapshoot if most of the other indie authors you know have not been successful.
That’s why it’s so important to join groups for successful authors and get to know people in those groups. Not only is it easier to believe you can succeed if you spend most of your time with positive people who have already done it instead of negative ones who think it’s impossible. Plus, you might find some mentors to help you along the way!

3. Learn How To Write to Market
Many indie authors cringe at the idea of writing to market — after all, one of the reasons we went indie is because we were sick and tired of traditional publishers telling us that our books don’t match market trends and won’t sell!
Writing to market doesn’t have to mean following trends or writing things you aren’t interested in, though. It just means being aware of the conventions for a given genre and matching them so that your book will sell.
Indie Authors Can Make a Living Writing
It’s natural to feel overwhelmed or frustrated at times while trying to get your indie writing career off the ground. But, keep on going and you’ll get there. Don’t give up.
